The Cleveland Institute of Music has a new principal conductor and director of orchestral and conducting programs.
CIM on Monday, May 10, named Carlos Kalmar to the positions, concluding a three-year international search for a successor to Carl Topilow.
Kalmar will begin his conducting and teaching duties at the classical music conservator as director designate on July 1, CIM said in a news release.
He stepped down in April from the Oregon Symphony, where he was music director for 18 years. Kalmar continues to serve as artistic director and principal conductor of Chicago s Grant Park Music Festival, a position he has held since 2000.
The Cleveland Institute of Music s Future of Music Faculty Fellowship has added internationally acclaimed musician, composer and educator Wynton Marsalis, and national leader in higher education and distinguished classical musician Dr. Ronald Crutcher to the already impressive list of keynote speakers and faculty for the inaugural program.
Powered by a grant awarded in the inaugural cycle of the Sphinx Venture Fund, this first-of-its-kind career development initiative will engage up to 35 Black and Latinx music professionals who are pursuing or considering academic careers, preparing them with the skills, insights and networks to flourish professionally and influence generations of musicians. Cleveland Institute of Music receives $1 million gift for new full-tuition scholarship

The Cleveland Institute of Music will boost its student scholarships thanks to a new $1 million gift from trustee A. Chace Anderson and his wife, Josie.
The award will be established in the duo s names. Full tuition will be awarded to an outstanding incoming student, according to a recent CIM release.
Officials said it s the latest gift in a string of an uptick of endowment giving, adding that since 2017 they ve received $16.3 million in new pledges and gifts dedicated to CIM s vision for the future of classical music.
