donald trump the republican presidential race picks up more team as cnn hosts a town hall with gop candidate nikki haley in iowa. give us a recap of how events are playing out there this weekend. reporter: paula, the republicans candidates have been fanning out for several days but they descended to the same room on saturday, the jody ernst s gathering. the candidates are sounding some themes that may work in campaigns. they are joined in unison in their criticism of the biden administration. most of them held their punches when it came to define or distinguish themselves with former president donald trump.
listen as nikki hayley was urging republican voters to look forward, not back. we ve got to start doing this in which we can win a national election. don t complain about what you get in the general if you don t play in this caucus because it matters. so saying leave the baggage and the negative behind, again, not mentioning anyone specifically by name but certainly her point was former president donald trump. she served in his administration as the u.n. ambassador. again, she has not really spent much time criticizing him or distinguishing him. these republicans candidates, paula, are all trying to walk a very fine line here into firing up voters and inspiring voters without turning off trump supporters. many republican voters are looking for a new choice. some of course are staying with the former president. but that s what the challenge and burden is for some of these
and what are you most looking forward to in the night sky over the next six months? oh, i think the annular solar eclipse on october 14th is going to be one of the biggest night sky events for the entire year. and an annular solar eclipse means it s not totally hidden, like we saw a few years ago, but the moon only covers the center of it so we see this spectacular vibrant ring around it, the ring of light. it s so incredibly beautiful. october 14th is when we ll be able to see that and that s something i m really looking forward to. thank you for joining us and helping to educate us about all the beauty and wonder up there. thanks for having me. hello. thanks for joining me. i m paula reed in washington in
this weekend for fredricka whitfield. we begin this hour with a dangerous near collision between chinese and u.s. warships. accusations are flying between both sides after an incident during a joint naval exercise between the u.s. and canadian navy in the taiwan strait. video showing the near collision was captured by a news crew on a nearby ship. you can see the chinese destroyer cutting directly across the front of the u.s. ship. we ve got full coverage of this story. cnn pentagon correspondent warren lieberman is with us. also joining me is dauvid sange, a cnn national and political analyst and a correspondent for the new york times. oren, both sides are blaming each other for this incident. what do you know as of now? paula, it s not uncommon at all when you see an encounter between the chinese and u.s. military to get two entirely
