ZIMBABWE QUITS COMMONWEALTH | Pacific Islands Report

ZIMBABWE QUITS COMMONWEALTH Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 12/08/2003 - 00:00 MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Dec. 8) - Zimbabwe has quit the British Commonwealth, after the organization said it was extending its suspension of the country’s membership. Zimbabwe was suspended early last year on the grounds President Robert Mugabe rigged his reelection and persecuted his opponents. A statement issued in Harare says President Mugabe has told the leaders of Jamaica, Nigeria and South Africa that Harare did not accept the Commonwealth s position and was leaving the group. The three leaders telephoned Mr Mugabe one after the other to inform him of the Commonwealth decision.

Hate Speech: The Trigger and Fuel of Violent Atrocity

The Moderator Thobekile Matimbe  Fellow Zimbabweans     I want to express my profound gratitude to the organisers for the honour and privilege granted to me to deliver the 2020 Annual Lecture under the theme: Hate Speech and its Impact on Transitional Justice. I feel scarcely qualified to do so but will endeavour to do justice to the honour. This is not my first time to be invited to speak by the National Transitional Justice Working Group. I had the privilege to share remarks on prospects for accountability for Gukurahundi Atrocities in Matopo and the vicinity of Bhalagwe Detention Camp in 2018 at the annual meeting of the Working Group. It now seems like a lifetime away. A lifetime in which much has happened without much seeming to have changed.
