House Speaker Ron Mariano was supposed to put some political heft behind state Rep. Jon Santiago s campaign for mayor on Tuesday, but his trip to the South End to endorse the two-term Democrat turned into a major headache for the mayoral hopeful instead.
Mariano apologized Tuesday afternoon after making a quip during the event at Plaza Betances that he was afraid my car s gonna get stolen, generating swift backlash on social media and a call from one other candidate for mayor - John Barros - for Santiago to reject the speaker s endorsement.

MASSACHUSETTS Two Massachusetts lawmakers are among more than 100 across the country now accused of sexual misconduct in the four years since the onset of the national #MeToo reckoning in 2017, according to data collected by The Associated Press.
The state lawmakers are among other politicians, entertainers and business leaders exposed in the social justice movement to end sexual abuse and sexual harassment. The movement began in 2017 when movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, now a convicted sex offender, was accused by more than 80 women of sexual misconduct allegations dating back to the late 1970s.

State Sen. John Velis, D-Westfield, was named Senate chair of the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Veterans and Federal Affairs. The committee assignments were announced on Friday by Senate President Karen Spilka.
“Those in our armed forces are selfless and courageous individuals who lay their lives on the line in defense of our great country. In turn, we need to do everything we can to make sure we are properly assisting and caring for those who serve and have served,” said Velis, who is a veteran and major in the Army Reserve. “Our veterans have their own unique needs and skillsets, and I am incredibly excited to chair the committee directly tasked with all aspects of Veteran affairs.”

Lawmakers are on the verge of expanding access to abortion in Massachusetts over objections from Gov. Charlie Baker about sections of their proposal involving minors seeking the procedure and abortions after 24 weeks of pregnancy.
With most House Democrats banding together, the House voted 107-46 on Monday to override the Republican governor s Christmas Eve veto of legislation (H 5179) reforming reproductive rights.
