Phillip Dewey Bergquist tried to get away from the attack before he collapsed, court documents said. George Ortiz then slit Bergquist's throat and rolled him into the river, prosecutors alleged.
Phillip Bergquist, a homeless homicide victim found near the Red River on Oct. 30, is directly related to John Gustav Bergquist. The Swedish immigrant was one of the area's first settlers and built the Bergquist Cabin in 1871, Moorhead's oldest home.
Phillip Dewey Bergquist, a 32-year-old man with no permanent address, was found dead at 11:15 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, near the Red River, just north of Main Avenue in Fargo.
