Four major school projects to proceed in Cork under €100m development
A population surge in East Cork has underlined the need for more school places in the area

More than €100m has been ringfenced for four major school projects in Co Cork, with the Department of Education set to go to tender for construction shortly.
They include a new community college and two primary schools to be constructed on a single campus in Carrigtwohill, as well as the rebuilding of the Patrician Academy in Mallow, which suffered a devastating fire in 2016.
Concern has again been raised over the ongoing delay in the long-awaited refurbishment project at the Patrician Academy in Mallow.
Last December local Labour TD Seán Sherlock questioned why it had been omitted from the Project 2040 projects list- despite it being his understanding that it had been set to go to tender early this year. While I welcome the fact that other local projects, including the Mallow Town Regeneration Plan and the 68-unit Hazelbrook social housing scheme are on the list, I find it odd that the Patrician is not. Particularly in light of the fact that it has been on the books since the fire back in 2016, said Deputy Sherlock.
The death has been announced of the popular Mourneabbey-born Bishop Emeritus of Lancaster Diocese in the UK, Bishop Pádraig O Donoghue, who passed away last Sunday morning.
In a message posted on the Diocese of Westminster website on Monday Vicar General Mgr Martin Hayes wrote with the sad news that Bishop O Donoghue, formerly a priest and Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese had died. He was very much in our prayers since the notice circulated yesterday. He died peacefully at home in Nazareth House, Mallow in Co Cork where he had been living since 2013, close to family and friends and being cared for by the Sisters and staff there, wrote Mgr Hayes.
