Elizabeth City protests viewed from Gaston sheriff, Gastonia activist
As protests continue in Elizabeth City following the fatal shooting last month of a Black man by police officers, Gaston County Sheriff Alan Cloninger and 24 of his deputies responded to the rural northeastern town to provide mutual aid. It s the same thing as if a hurricane had come through there and they needed help, explained Cloninger on Tuesday. There was a request made and we went to help.
The Sheriff s Office unit was accompanied by two paramedics with Gaston Emergency Medical Services who have had tactical training, Cloninger said.
Other Sheriff s Office deputies from Catawba, Brunswick, New Hanover and Alamance counties joined the Gaston County unit, which was led by Cloninger.
