Elizabeth City protests viewed from Gaston sheriff, Gastonia activist

Elizabeth City protests viewed from Gaston sheriff, Gastonia activist As protests continue in Elizabeth City following the fatal shooting last month of a Black man by police officers, Gaston County Sheriff Alan Cloninger and 24 of his deputies responded to the rural northeastern town to provide mutual aid. It s the same thing as if a hurricane had come through there and they needed help, explained Cloninger on Tuesday. There was a request made and we went to help. The Sheriff s Office unit was accompanied by two paramedics with Gaston Emergency Medical Services who have had tactical training, Cloninger said. Other Sheriff s Office deputies from Catawba, Brunswick, New Hanover and Alamance counties joined the Gaston County unit, which was led by Cloninger.
