Were going to start today by talking about candidate debates, and that is like my favorite thing about a campaign, whether i was on a Campaign Staff or a candidate. Hi, im kate and im the curator of votes for women. Im standing in front of what we call our title treatment. It is a large blowup of a german born actress. The allegorical figure that represents the United States during the conclusion of the 1913 parade in washington, d. C. Thats just one event of the long Suffrage Movement this exhibition highlights. We have 124 objects of this long history bringing it right up to 1920. But also the 19th amendment. And what it didnt do to enfranchise all women including women with color. An exhibit marking the cen ten val of the 19th amendment using images of early suffrage leaders, miss lemay shows how the movement interacted with the abolitionist and tetraum presen movement. Welcome to the National Portrait gallery. Im kate lemay, the curator of votes for women, a portrait of persistence. For this exhibition i worked about 3 1 2 years researching and teaching myself this history and finding all the objects. In the exhibition we have 124 objects of which there are 63 portraits and i was hoping to commemorate the 19th amendment and tell the history of the 19th amendment and how women lobbied to get this amendment passed and ratified, but also ask questions about it and ask what does it do and what does it not do. And why 1965 and the vote rights act is considered another sort of part two of the 19th amendment. For this exhibition, i worked 3. 5 years researching, teaching myself this history, and finding all the objects. In this exhibit we have about 124 objects, including 63 portraits. In thisw exhibition, i was hoping to commemorate the 19th amendment and tell the history of the 19th amendment and how women lobbied to get this amendment passed and ratified. But also ask questions about it and ask what does it do and not do and why 1965, the Voting Rights act, was considered a part two of the voting amendment.
