The number of deaths in the Porcupine Health Unit area due to opioid overdoses nearly doubled in 2020, according to a preliminary report from the Office of the Chief Coroner that was released Thursday.
The PHU’s confirmed and probable death toll from opioid overdoses rose to 40 in 2020, from 22 a year earlier representing an 82 per cent increase.

The province, meanwhile, experienced a 60 per cent increase, from 1,516 in 2019 to 2,426 last year.
Other health units in the region also reported higher numbers of deaths some with significant increases.
