Passing of PR increases CRC death toll

Parnel ‘PR’ Campbell Social Share The lamented passing of Mr. Parnel Campbell Q.C, former Chairman of the multi-sectoral Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) which spearheaded the failed constitutional review process of 2003-2009, brings into focus a most disconcerting statistic. The CRC embarked on its arduous task 18 years ago with a membership of 25, supplemented by a similar number of alternates, under the leadership of distinguished regional jurist Dr Nicholas Liverpool of Dominica with Mr Campbell as his deputy. All but the representatives of the two parliamentary political parties, the ULP (4) and the NDP (2) were drawn from civil society organisations. By the time that Mr Campbell was laid to rest yesterday, a significant number of those persons had completed their mission on earth and departed for the “great beyond”. Cuba has lost a true friend in the death of Brother Parnel Campbell Q.C. Bro. ‘PR’ as he was affectionately known, had further demonstrated his long-standing defence of the right of the Republic of Cuba to pursue its own independent path of development, by volunteering his skills in heading a local Committee in defence of what became known as “the Cuban Five”. These were five Cuban intelligence officers arrested, tried and jailed in the USA for their actions in collecting information against persons who continued to plan terrorist activities against Cuba. They were released in 2014 following a massive international solidarity campaign.

Social Share Mr Parnel Campbell, QC affectionately called ‘PR’ was a long-standing senior member of the legal profession in St Vincent and the Grenadines and the OECS. He was well-known as a lawyer and politician throughout the Caribbean. PR Campbell was a true nation builder. He contributed to national development in many ways and will be remembered as a man whose life exemplified a commitment to public service. He did so as a politician, as a political commentator and as a vocal champion of the rule law and of public order.

QC Campbell was an infinite source of inspiration PR Campbell who sang calypso under the stage name King JaJa, was crowned the UWI Cave Hill calypso king with his songs “Buy Your Own Cigarette” and “Bandit” Social Share Parnel Campbell was a mentor and friend who seemed never to tire from his unwavering encouragement of my academic pursuits from as early as my childhood. He took great delight, which exuded from his entire being, when he learnt that I had chosen law as my career path, and welcomed me to our noble profession. Over the years, QC Campbell was an infinite source of inspiration, knowledge and guidance. Mine has been the privilege to experience the essence of the philosophy behind the term ‘legal fraternity’ as so ably and genuinely demonstrated by Parnel Campbell Q.C. I will forever miss him, but I am grateful for the memories which will most certainly live on.
