This is the fifth in a six-part Toolshed series that uses FanGraphs Steamer 600 projections to look at how prospects would fare over a full Major League season in 2021. The system bases its forecast on 600 plate appearances for position players, 450 plate appearances for catchers, 200 innings for starting pitchers and 65 innings for relievers taking into account age, past performance and previous Minor League levels, among other factors. Because of the canceled Minor League season in 2020, all players included in the team tables below are ranked prospects who either played at Class A Advanced or above in 2019, sit on their organization s 40-man roster or are among MLB.com s T

There was no 2020 season for minor league baseball. Normally we spend all year following the Oakland A’s farm system to see how the next generation of players is developing, but last summer we only got to see glimpses of the small handful of youngsters who got the call to appear in MLB games.
Despite the lack of new data, though, this is the time when we usually rank the A’s top prospects, so let’s do it anyway. After all, there will at least be a few changes to last winter’s list, including a couple key names graduating off of it and some interesting new ones joining via draft, trade, and the international market.

The Winter Meetings, an early December standard for MLB teams expanding beyond living memory, will be held virtually this offseason as a heath and safety precaution. Despite the traditional smoky-room feel to the event being scuttled by the coronavirus, it will still serve as the hub for General Managers and agents from across the game to meet and work out transactions, including the Rule 5 draft.
