NATO Deploys F-35 Combat Aircraft to Baltic Sea for First Time
Buried in a routine report on Italy’s contribution to NATO’s Air Policing for the past 59 years is mention of Italian F-35s currently deployed to the Ämari Air Base in Estonia. That base as well as the Šiauliai Air Base in Lithuania and now the Malbork Air Base in Poland are used for around-the-clock air patrols by NATO warplanes.
As far back as 2004 with the Lithuanian base, fighter jets from Belgium, Britain, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey and the U.S. have flown a variety of advanced multirole combat aircraft near Russia’s borders; Latvia, Lithuania and Poland all border both Russian territory and Belarus.
Six Israeli F-35 stealth fighters are currently in Italy for a two-week air exercise with the Italy, the U.S. and the U.K., the Israeli Air Force said on Sunday. Royal Air Force Typhoons have used the MBDA Storm Shadow cruise missile in action for the first time, with a pair of aircraft reportedly firing four weapons at cave complexes on March 10. The network of caves, southwest of Erbil, was being used by Daesh terrorist forces.

A Swiss selection of the Eurofighter next year would enable the nation to locally assemble at least three-quarters of a 40-strong fleet, according to Airbus Defence & Space.
The German government on 18 November submitted its response to a final request for proposals from Bern for a new fighter capability, with Airbus leading the Eurofighter consortium’s offer.

Swiss industry could assemble more than 30 Eurofighters if Bern selects type
Switzerland would directly benefit from Germany’s recent Project Quadriga order for 38 Tranche 4 Eurofighters, says Wolfgang Gammel, Airbus Defence & Space’s head of combat aircraft sales. The configuration proposed for the Swiss air force is identical to Berlin’s new standard, including an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar being developed by Hensoldt.
