Waterspout filmed off Panama City during storms in Florida Panhandle

As a line of severe storms made its way through the Panhandle today, the chances were good for waterspouts off-shore columns of wind and water. Twitter user @DrA Singh caught one as it sat offshore in Panama City Beach, and kept his phone steady as the apparent waterspout made its way closer and closer to shore. The Twitter user, whose bio lists him as Ankur Singh, a Georgia Institute of Technology professor of immunology,  notes that rip currents were also bad as the spout continued onto the beach. The National Weather Service has not officially designated any tornado as yet, but there is damage in the Bay County area during a tornado warning.

Cruise ship bills targeting Key West continue forward

With only two committees left to weigh in on proposed state legislation that would reverse cruise ship restrictions in Key West, organizers are preparing last-ditch efforts to prevent the state from overseeing the city’s port. Josh Aubuchon, the lobbyist hired by the Key West Committee for Safer, Cleaner Ships, said the Senate Rules Committee and House Commerce Committee are the final two legislative stops before the bills go to the full floor for a vote. While all previous committee and subcommittee hearings have resulted in favorable votes for the proposed and increasingly-amended bills, Aubuchon said there is still a possibility the cruise ship legislation might get lost in the flurry of bills still left to be heard, effectively dying in committee. He said the Senate Rules Committee has 118 bills to get through in the next month before the legislative sessions ends. The House Commerce Committee’s docket has 48 bills remaining to be heard.

Lockdown lessons in review: Rolling in toilet paper, gaining the C-19

A year ago seems like five years ago I think we might all agree. Once upon a time on a sunny day in early March 2020 I went by Walgreens on the way home from work and bought a case of canned goods, one case of water, three cases of Coors Light, toilet paper and some batteries. Mrs. Dowling said what in the world is all this stuff? I shared some chatter about possible lockdowns and other rumors, which I assumed were going to be all rumors, and it is not like the Coors was going to go to waste. A month later toilet paper was in short supply in the world, but not at our house. What in the world is wrong with Americans?

Tallahassee Memorial, FSU medical campus coming to Panama City Beach

FSU President John Thrasher updated the university’s Board of Trustees on the proposal last week, saying a joint proposal submitted in February had been accepted, allowing for planning to move forward. The health care campus is planned for an 87-acre parcel near State Highway 79 and Phillip Griffitts Sr. Parkway, close to the Latitude Margaritaville Watersound community. The letter of intent involves the three parties planning and developing the campus to initially include an ambulatory and urgent care center, according to the release. The land is being provided by the St. Joe Company. Groundbreaking could begin sometime next year. Future development includes building an Emergency Center and 100-bed inpatient medical center offering services such as gastroenterology, urology, gynecology, cardiology and general surgery among others.
