Scoopers Pound Douglas in Both Games of a Saturday Doubleheader May 1, 2021Sports STURGIS, S.D. Kelton Olson didn’t allow a single run and just three hits as Sturgis defeated Douglas 15-0 on Saturday in game one of a doubleheader. In the first inning, Sturgis got their offense started on a solo homer by senior Thor Sundstrom and runs scored by RJ Andrzejewski and Kaden Olson and led 3-0.  The Scoopers put on their rally caps and put nine runs across the plate in the third inning. The Scoopers batters contributing to the big inning included Dustin Alan, Evan Stroud, Conner Cruickshank, Hunter Janzen, Andrzejewski, and Olson, all driving in runs in the frame.

STURGIS, S.D. Two pitchers combined for a one-hit shutout as the Sturgis Scoopers blanked the St. Thomas More Cavaliers, 14-0 in five innings. Junior hurler Kelton Olson was dominant early for Sturgis, striking out the first two Cavalier batters and holding St. Thomas More scoreless after the top half of the first. The Scooper offense got going quick in the bottom half of the inning with singles and stolen bases from Kaden Olson, Ridge Inhofer and David Anderson to give Sturgis a 3-0 lead after one. The Scoopers exploded for five runs in the second inning and five more in the third to lead 13-0. Sturgis stole bases at will on the Cavalier defense, with 11 total stolen bases in the ballgame.

STURGIS, S.D. The Spearfish Spartan boys basketball team completed a season sweep of the Sturgis Scoopers on Tuesday night, winning a tight game at West Gymnasium, 52-46. The Spartans previously defeated the Scoopers on Jan. 19 in Spearfish, 69-41. Their second meeting went down to the final minute. Spearfish guard Teysean Eaglestaff and forward Tony Serrano both drained three-pointers to open up the game for the Spartans, who jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead early in the first. The Scoopers tightened up defensively and got buckets from Owen Cass, Konner Berndt and Dysen Peterson to close the gap, but Spearfish took an 11-7 lead in to the second quarter.

Owen Cass led the Scoopers (2-15) with 16 points. Cass was a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line. Spearfish Girls and Boys Pick Up Victories Over Sturgis January 20, 2021Sports STURGIS, S.D. / SPEARFISH, S.D. The Spearfish girls faced the Lady Scoopers at West Gymnasium on Tuesday night, overcoming a first half deficit to beat Sturgis, 46-33. The Scooper boys traveled to Spearfish to take on the Spartans on their home court and lost, 69-41. The Scooper girls came out hot in the first quarter, with junior Lexi Long leading the way with seven points. Long was perfect from the free throw line, making five of five shots. The Scoopers led 13-9 after one. Sturgis could only manage five points in the second quarter but still led the Spartans at the half, 18-17. Spearfish outscored Sturgis 15-8 in the third quarter and led 32-26 headed into the fourth. The Scoopers scored seven points in the final stanza to 14 from the Spartans, who ran away with a 46-33 win.
