racist, and he s all these things, which, of course, then he just says, here s what i m talking about. i m talking about trade. i m talking about things that the vast majority of americans sort of think he s doing a pretty good job with. and so he has done it again. he has got everybody out there saying, oh, we re really talking about white nationalists and this is a code word and dog whistle. and he seems reasonable in what he s saying, and here s the media again picking on donald trump, trying to make a story where there isn t a story and the president walks away and sort of takes another victory lap around the media that overreacts. well, i don t think we ve overreacted on this show. i m saying the media i m not saying this show. i haven t called him a racist, but certainly it is significant, a moment of political significant canals for the president of the united states to call himself a nationalist. it is. and i go back and forth. because he is so he lacks education on
mind. we know how he thinks and how he quickly reacts and overreacts. and i can imagine if you are in the white house, close to the president, and see him in action on a day-to-day basis, there s a genuine, real concern. take us behind the scenes. i know you speak with your republican colleagues. do you hear their fears, their concerns about all of this? sometimes. seldom. they ll tell us that they re embarrassed by things the president has said and done. they think they re inconsistent with basic republican principles. but then after a moment, they quickly add, but 85% of my republicans back home would march over a cliff for this president. so they see the political reality and the net result is the silence of the lambs. very few senators speak out. you just had one on the program, lindsey graham. i respect him very much, he s a good friend. but very few are willing to speak out candidly about what the president is saying and doing. well, with the republicans who are speaking ou
come out. that will incite violence. you can predictably say that you re going to see a big group the next day whenever you see tiki torches posted all over the internet. whatever position does that put you in? you don t know what you re up against. when people show up in helmets, with homemade weapons, that is no easy task. it s a difficult situation for local officials. i m glad to see that government call of has activated the national guard. it s difficult because one does not want to overreacts, and essentially inflamed the situation any more than it already is. we also need, and this seems difficult, we want to protect the legitimate exercise of free speech even when what is being said is absolutely repugnant. when the line is crossed, and we ve seen this with dennis demonstrators, they believe in violence. they came armed. they have incited violence.
