Toronto works to remove makeshift homeless encampments despite pleas from city advocates

Hundreds of people serve mayor with notices as they demand city drop lawsuit against carpenter

Posted: Feb 28, 2021 6:42 PM ET | Last Updated: March 1 Protester outside the home of Toronto Mayor John Tory hold onto a cutout of the mayor that is covered with paper notices. The notices urge the mayor to drop an application for a court injunction against Toronto carpenter Khaleel Seivwright. (Michael Charles Cole/CBC) An estimated 800 people took part in a protest on Sunday to demand that the city drop an application for a court injunction against a Toronto carpenter who has built dozens of tiny shelters for unhoused people. Over several hours, protesters left notices on a cardboard cutout of Mayor John Tory outside his condo. The notices indicate that the protesters support residents of encampments in city parks and oppose the application, which was filed in Ontario Superior Court on Feb. 12 against Khaleel Seivwright.
