In 2023, India s box-office collections hit an all-time high of ₹12,226 crore, marking a 15% growth over 2022, and surpassing the previous record of ₹10,948 crore in 2019, according to the Ormax Box Office Report. This reflects a recovery in the Indian film industry, which had faced a post-pandemic slump. Hindi films had a record year, crossing the ₹5,000-crore mark for the first time, with a gross box-office collection of ₹5,380 crore.
Media insights company Ormax Media has upgraded Ormax Stream Track, their streaming content testing tool, to test documentaries as well. The tool has been used to test 214 web series, direct-to-OTT films, and OTT reality shows since 2016. The company stated that 14 Indian documentaries have been released on major streaming platforms in India since the start of 2022. Additionally, several international documentaries are beginning to find traction in India, suggesting that the documentary genre is gaining more interest in the Indian market.
