World. I hope we have given that to our children. I know george w i heard him say several times his dad has given him unconditional love. That is true. All of this baloney about george competing with his father, its just ridiculous. They are devoted to each other, and there was never any competition, and my george is putty in their hands, i must confess, but i think they feel loved, and i hope if i have a legacy other than being the enforcer that it would be that i raised a great family along with george. American history tv is featuring cspans original series, first ladies, influence and image at 8 00 eastern sunday nights rather rest of the year. Next week, we look at hillary clinton. This is about 20 minutes. Susan chris foss, your work has focused on the Pacific Northwest from the 1950s to 2000. Why did you pick that timeframe . Christopher i think part of it has to do with that being the emergence of the Pacific Northwest as the region that a lot of people in the u. S. Think of it as an environmental destination or tourist destination, or a place to go and have fun and to recreate. It has to become these things through a process. The process that i look at as having become that is through this process of globalization. Now, we talk about globalization as being relatively new. Something that starts in the 1980s which is really when this buzzword starts getting thrown around by political scientists and historians. As a way to kind of interpret and understand the world the postcold war world. What really changes is the northwests traditional reliance on trade is augmented on the one hand. Also the rise of a number of really significant political players. So, some of
Evention of the awkward or unfair laws have happened. That doesnt speak specifically to dominicans but thats a very specific experience that i had in arizona. Theres an interesting demographic and economic shift taking place because Mexico Mexico is doing better. It is. The mexican economy is doing better than other Central American i mean, you have the horrible problem with the drug wars but in some of the Central American countries that are sending a lot of migrants theyre really fleeing, you know, terrible levels of violence. So some the jobs that mexican immigrants used to do are now being done by the the lowest jobs are being done by Central Americans. And the interesting thing about the Child Migrants is that, you know, first they had to endure this, you know, very dangerous journey from Central America through mexico and then get over the border. But the interesting thing is that they get kind of dumped into this system of where they have the possibility of asking for asylum eve
Talk about the whatifs. Because, like many people throughout the country, they dont know what the next steps are. Theyve had to cut back and jill has even had to stop going to her doctor appointments because of her the injuries that shes been treated for that are associated with her military service. Her husband now is considering dropping out of school in order to bring home more money to help their family. And jill is applying now for a second job. What especially worries her is that if she has to work both night and day, and with her husband now not sure what hes going to have to do as far as his education or going back to work, is that her children, again, ages 4 and 6, might have to be with a babysitter not just during the day but at night now. And i would ask any mother or for that matter any parent who thinks that thats acceptable. Theres so much sacrifice that we have asked of our veterans and their families and in this case were asking so much for this family that all they wan
Their family. The children had to make the difficult decision to take them off life support. To is a goodbye to a parent, you know, it still just seems unreal. Me and my brother were talking earlier. My like my mom and dad are going to walk through the door any second, but we know theyre not. Its just hard decision that any child has to make. Im just glad that my brother was there with me, and i was able to lean on him as he was able to lean on me. All the memories, my mom made christmas happen. My mom and dad, they both made christmas happen. They made every holiday happen. Its crazy, just like i said, it doesnt seem real. I remember this one time, my dad, when we were younger, he used to put fake giant bunny footprints through the house, lie the easter bunny came through when easter came around. Thats one of things i will always remember, like we have a home video of that. And sean, look, the easter bunny came, look. [ laughter ] im always going to remember that. Thats one of the mem
