State: 2,432 cases of COVID-19 in Volusia, Flagler schools

State: 2,432 cases of COVID-19 in Volusia, Flagler schools The report from the Florida Department of Health includes cases reported at private schools.  Flagler County s spring break was the week of March 15, and Volusia s was this week. Now, officials are watching to see whether there will be an increase in cases after the break similar to when students returned in January.  Both districts are collaborating with local health departments to vaccinate teachers, although the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says teachers don t need to be vaccinated for schools to reopen safely. Last week, the CDC updated its guidelines to say that masked students can sit 3 feet apart in classrooms rather than 6 feet.

State: Volusia, Flagler schools count almost 1,900 cases of COVID-19

State: Volusia, Flagler schools count almost 1,900 cases of COVID-19 The report from the Florida Department of Health includes cases reported at private schools.  This week the Volusia County school district stopped regular temperature checks at schools for students, staff and visitors. The safety procedure was implemented when school began this year, but was not a recommended measure by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  The CDC updated its existing guidance last week to say teachers don t need to be vaccinated for schools to reopen safely, and reinforced its recommendation to socially distance. This has been difficult to achieve in Volusia County, where the majority of students are learning in-person.

COVID cases top 1,800 in Volusia, Flagler schools, state says

COVID cases top 1,800 in Volusia, Flagler schools, state says The report from the Florida Department of Health includes cases reported at private schools.  On Friday the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its existing guidance to say teachers don t need to be vaccinated for schools to reopen safely, and reinforced its recommendation to socially distance. This has been difficult to achieve in Volusia County, where the majority of students are learning in-person.  Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran said in a statement that districts should stay the course they began in summer 2020.   The number of new cases is appearing to slow down from a peak earlier this year. In January, the Volusia County school district reported about 500 cases of COVID-19 in public schools and Flagler reported about 100.

Carter County cost cutting study would close four elementary schools, one high school

ELIZABETHTON — The Carter County School System would become much smaller if steps suggested in a new cost-saving study were carried out. In addition to closing Keenburg and Little Milligan elementary schools in the first year, the study suggests closing Cloudland High School and Unaka and Valley Forge elementary schools over the next three years. The School Board will discuss the cost study during its next meeting on Feb. 18. The suggestions would reduce the number of elementary schools to five and leave three high schools. The school district would keep its only middle school and only alternative school. Statistics show the district has been getting smaller. Student enrollment has dropped over the years from around 6,000 to 4,763.

State reports 120 new COVID cases in Volusia and Flagler schools

State reports 120 new COVID cases in Volusia and Flagler schools The report from the Florida Department of Health includes cases reported at private schools.  In January, the Volusia County school district reported about 500 cases of COVID-19 in public schools and Flagler reported about 100.  Volusia County school officials raised concerns about the number of cases after the holidays, and indicated that the current precautions including masks will remain in effect. Teachers and staff in the district who are over age 65 have been eligible for vaccinations through a partnership with the district and county.  The state s numbers include a breakdown of how many cases are in each school information the districts have been unwilling to provide. Neither agency is providing information about how many students or staff members are in quarantine.
