Oquawka, Ill.- The Henderson County Sheriff's Office has announced it is stepping up enforcement for the Memorial Day "Click It or Ticket" campaign, which will run from May 19th through the 30th. According to a news release, the campaign leverages education and enforcement to save lives. "Seat belts have proven to be life-saving in the event of a crash," said Sheriff Matthew Link "Unfortunately, many still don't buckle up. Worse yet, not wearing a seat belt is a habit that can be passed on to younger generations who follow the example set by their elders." Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer and is a very popular travel weekend. Wearing a seatbelt can reduce the risk of fatal injury by 45%. Illinois currently has a 93% seat belt use compliance rate, but unbelted occupants still account for over half of those killed in motor vehicle accidents. Burlington, IA- The Burlington Police Department has announced the arrest of an Oquawka, Illinois man for robbing a convenience store. According to a news release, Burlington detectives began investigating an armed robbery that occurred at the Phillips 66 gas station, 1900 Summer Street, just before 6 AM Monday, May 8th. At 6:02 am the convenience store clerk called DESCOM and reported the robbery. Burlington Police Officers responded to the scene and were told by the female clerk that a man entered the store, brandished a handgun, and demanded money. The clerk said she gave the man her purse and he fled from the store. No one was injured in the incident Burlington Detectives were able to obtain a license plate number from the vehicle used in the robbery and were able to determine a link between the vehicle, and an address in Oquawka, Illinois. Detectives went to the address and located the vehicle outside the residence. Detectives then knocked on the door and the suspect from the robb

According to a news release, the Henderson County Sheriff's Office issued 3 citations for hands-free law violations and 11 speeding citations, 1 no insurance citation, 1 failure to signal citation, and 1 driving suspended citation during April's Distracted Driving Awareness Month enforcement campaign. The Henderson County Sheriff's Office joined forces with the Illinois State Police, local law enforcement, and highway safety partners for this enforcement effort. The Illinois distracted driving campaign was funded with federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
