Despite plenty of time and warning, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube still seemed to be scrambling in their response to President Trump’s calls for an uprising in the wake of his election loss. In the aftermath of the Capitol violence, Twitter and Facebook are now implementing some of the toughest measures yet to limit Trump’s reach.

In November, the company announced it would extend its ban on political ads for at least another month, and possibly longer, in an attempt to quell confusion over an election that President Donald Trump lost but still hasn’t conceded. Google similarly told advertisers it was unlikely to lift its political ad ban in November or December, according to the Wall Street Journal. Then, last week, Google lifted its ban on political advertisements.

Open Sourced logo Federal security agencies have finally confirmed that the massive hack of government and private computer systems that was uncovered in mid-December was likely Russian in origin. A statement from a joint task force issued January 5 was one of the first from an administration that has been reluctant to share many details about the hack thus far, possibly because President Trump refuses to acknowledge that Russia was its most likely perpetrator. The Department of Justice has now revealed that its email accounts were breached as well.
