Subscriber only The government has been accused of throwing loose change at the environment and climate, with millions of dollars for fossil fuel industries, but little for renewables and electric vehicles. Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) spokesperson Matt Rose said the government continues to shovel public money at fossil fuel projects through Budget allocations such as the $275 million set aside for five hydrogen energy hubs. Subsidies for the gas industry fly in the face of climate science and further demonstrate to the world that despite shifting global trends, Australia remains a climate laggard, Mr Rose said.

Australia has less than 10 years to drastically scale up emissions reduction efforts as part of a global push to halt the devastating impacts of rising temperatures, a major new Climate Council report has warned.
The report urges Australia to cut emissions by 75 per cent before 2030 and reach net zero emissions by 2035 - while forecasting that global average temperatures will exceed 1.5 degrees above preindustrial levels during the 2030s.
“The problem is the rates of climate change, report author Will Steffen told SBS News. The rate at which the temperature is rising, the rate at which the sea level is rising, the rate at which extreme weather is changing is outside the norms for ecosystems to adapt.
