In a petition by its Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraj, the group stated that Adoke attempted to destroy the reputation of the anti-graft group through a string of lies aimed at diverting public attention from gross allegations of corruption that surrounded the OPL 245 oil deals.

In a statement on Tuesday, its Co-Founder and Director of Global Witness, Simon Taylor, said the allegation against Suraj, who is also the chairman of HEDA, is an attempt to silence him and his organisation.  According to the statement, proper investigations were not carried out and this resulted in the ongoing police harassment and intimidation.

Suraj, who is also the chairman of a frontline civil society coalition, Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC), has been a leading voice in the quest for accountability and justice for Nigeria with respect to the massive bribery, which followed the sale of the controversial OPL 124 oil block, also known as Malabu. He was arrested on Wednesday, April 14, in Abuja, following a petition by former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Bello Adoke, who has been standing trial in Nigeria and Italy.
