telling the services we re going to have to take some cuts, at least in the latter part of a five-year period as the war in afghanistan and by that time the war in iraq should be over and done with completely. but as the war in afghanistan wears down, the pentagon is going to have to take some of the budget hits like just about every federal agency has to go through. all right. jim, we ll be watching for the details there. thank you for joining us. a scathing report from a panel of investigators claims the gulf oil disaster on bp and contractor halliburton and investigators say it could happen again. the commission says systemic problems plagued the offshore industry. they risked things to save time and money. for instance they approved a well kmoenlt in just 90 minutes. that piece failed leading to a
coast. it s just gotten to a point where the people in louisiana ask do they even understand what is going on down here? they have the entire offshore industry virtually shut down. this is remarkable for the democratic senator to hold up a democratic administration budget director. more remarkable are her words. that is a stunning indictment of the administration, saying that this their moratorium is doing more damage than the actual spill. she was saying it back then, but it s amazing to me how little attention this is getting beyond this show and inside washington baseball. it s really not getting the kind of attention, and if you talk to people in the gulf they will tell you what she is saying. this is a clearly a pitch to the home crowd back there. because they are saying the exact same thing. this has been devastating and it continues to be devastating. the question everyone is asking is what is the hold up. bret: quickly, democrats running in this coming election.
file, and jack, when things could not go much worse, they went worse today. it looks like that, yeah. as oil continues to gush into the gulf of mexico, the debate over deepwater offshore drilling is heating. the obama administration pushing back after a federal judge ruled against the six-month moratorium that the president put in place after the bp oil disaster. the interior secretary ken salazar says they will issue a new moratorium less restrictive on the moratorium. the white house says it does not make any sense to keep drilling at the depths without knowing what happened, and that doing so puts people in danger, but not many agree. many in the offshore industry and local politicians are calling for the ban to be lifted saying it is hurting business and throwing lots of people out of work. the federal judge sided with the companies that filed suit against the government saying that they are suffering irreparable harm as a result of the moratorium. and the senator and governor of
they re always trying to monitor this, and going over the areas where they laid boom. at the same time, they have to get that boom out in as many new areas as possible. it s a difficult operation. when you look at the incredibly vast area of marsh land of barrier island that they have to try to protect, it s almost insurmountable. these fishermen are part of this effort, they have volunteered. they are jumping in to try to save their industry as best they can? a lot of them that we saw, they had to take a crash course on how to do that, and how to respond to some spills and other procedures to follow. it s not like they can just go out there, they have to wait for the boom to be delivered to them. that s been an issue with bp trying to get as much information as they can. they re trying to get as many guys out there as they can to lay the boom, training them how
weather s not cooperating. we may have to accept the application of disbursements as the lesser of two evils, compared to having more amounts of oil come ago shore. is there a fear with the disbursements that may still kill wildlife, perhaps it will kill fewer species of wildlife than to allow the spill to just move ashore on its own? well, any of these things are simply nibbling away at the edges of a very large problem. obviously, the central focus for everybody involved, the spiller, bp, the administration is not a blame game right now, it s to figure out how to shut off the leak at the sea floor. that s the primary thing. does this make you angry? well, i ve been through three of these now, they do occur around the world at various intervals, i think this industry needs to wake up and get serious
