Supporting Nigel in his year as High Sheriff is wife Libby THE new High Sheriff of Merseyside has been sworn in with a message for young people that you matter . Just hours after being his installation, Nigel Lanceley carried out his first engagement, attending an awards ceremony for the Prince’s Trust and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service. The virtual event saw Nigel, who lives in Wirral, award certificates to a group of young people aged 16-25 who had successfully completed the MFRS Prince’s Trust Team Programme. The course provides participants, all of whom are unemployed, with a range of skills including interview techniques, CV writing, goal setting and team-working.
James Attrill is the second in his family to hold the prestigious position. James is a farmer and a partner at Merstone s BCM rural property specialists. He aims to spend his year highlighting mental health, especially in children and young people, and also supporting the emergency services.
What is a High Sheriff? A High Sheriff, easily spotted when wearing a distinctive black, or blue, velvet uniform. The role is an independent and non-political figure and dates to the Saxon era. There have been High Sheriffs for 1,000 years. High Sheriff is a Royal appointment, lasting for just 12 months, and the position was historically known as a ‘Shire Reeve’, responsible to the King for the maintenance of law and order within the shire, or county.

Caroline Bewes DL has been appointed as High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire following a Covid-secure ceremony.

The new High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire said it is “a real honour” to serve the county in her latest role.
Caroline Bewes DL was appointed to the post in a Covid-secure declaration ceremony on April 6, as she succeeds Brigadier Timothy Seal TD who held the role last year.
As High Sheriff, Mrs Bewes will focus on supporting young people in Cambridgeshire and look to support the judiciary, police and prison services, as well as engaging with the voluntary sector through the Cambridgeshire Community Foundation.
Doddington Hall owner is appointed new High Sheriff of Lincolnshire
An independent non-political Royal appointment
The owner of Doddington Hall in Lincoln has been appointed as the new High Sheriff of Lincolnshire.
Claire Birch, who has lived at Doddington Hall with her husband James since 2006, made her declaration in a small turnover ceremony in the gardens of her home on Sunday, April 18. The declaration was witnessed by The Hon. Mr Justice Hildyard and Claire appointed solicitor Michael Pace as Undersheriff.
The Office of High Sheriff is an independent non-political Royal appointment for a single year. Claire will take over the role from Michael Scott, who has held the title since April last year.
