Earlier, my colleague Sumi Somaskanda spoke to robert costa of cbs news, about a potential path to a deal and the obstacles mr mccarthy would have to overcome. At this point, there is a viable path. Based on my conversations with some House Republicans today about getting the government funded for a short period, maybe three or four days, maybe a week, maybe two weeks that would be whats called a short term, clean, Continuing Resolution. Some kind of stopgap bill to keep the government running as negotiations are ongoing and negotiations are ongoing. House speaker Kevin Mccarthy is struggling to get his republican members to come around to a consensus. Theres a real debate among republicans about how to handle immigration with any kind of government funding bill, how far to go. So far, mccarthy has really been toiling in terms of getting members of the so called House Freedom caucus, the hard line conservatives, to come along.
