COVID NYC Update: 'Keep Schools Open' rallies being held in New York, nationwide

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) Rallies are scheduled across the New York City area and around the nation in support of the reopening of public schools. On Saturday morning, a protest took place on Chambers Street in Lower Manhattan, while an afternoon rally is scheduled in Yonkers. The group s main argument is that schools are essential, while advocating for a return to five days a week in-person classes. New York City s high school students will be heading back into the classroom this month, after the New York City Department of Education announced that high schools will reopen for in-person learning on March 22.

COVID NYC Update: New York City middle schools resume in-person learning

Ken Rosato and Shirleen Allicot interview NYC Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza. The 30,000 employees who have been vaccinated so far include teachers, principals, assistant principals, guidance counselors and social workers. That number only includes those vaccinated at city run sites in NYC. The UFT represents more than 120,000 teachers, guidance counselors, paraprofessionals and other school-based members, said Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers. Even putting the most positive spin on the city s numbers, there are tens of thousands of staff who have not yet had access to the vaccine. Teachers returned to middle school classrooms Wednesday to prepare for today s resumption of in-person learning.

NEW YORK (WABC) As COVID vaccine eligibility expands once again in New York, one of the top spots for those appointments will be the newly-opened site at Yankee Stadium. The massive new site, which opened Friday to Bronx residents only, is stepping up in the race to vaccinate New Yorkers. Opening day happened on the same day Governor Andrew Cuomo announced those with comorbidities and underlying health conditions are eligible for the vaccine regardless of their age starting Feb. 15 It s a very rare sight to see Yankee Stadium them open for activity in February let alone at 8 a.m. Saturday when vaccinations will be available for Bronx residents.
