COVID NYC Update: New York City middle schools resume in-person learning

Ken Rosato and Shirleen Allicot interview NYC Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza. The 30,000 employees who have been vaccinated so far include teachers, principals, assistant principals, guidance counselors and social workers. That number only includes those vaccinated at city run sites in NYC. The UFT represents more than 120,000 teachers, guidance counselors, paraprofessionals and other school-based members, said Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers. Even putting the most positive spin on the city s numbers, there are tens of thousands of staff who have not yet had access to the vaccine. Teachers returned to middle school classrooms Wednesday to prepare for today s resumption of in-person learning.

COVID NYC Update: Concern over new COVID variant found in New York City area

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) Another new COVID variant has been identified and this one is circulating in the New York City area, two studies have found. It is not yet known if the variant is more contagious, deadly, or if it impacts the vaccine, but more will be learned as scientists continue to study it. The new variant was identified separately by two research groups one at CalTech and another at Columbia. Both published their findings ahead of a formal scientific peer review process. Scientists are calling the COVID variant B.1.526. Although it shares a mutation in common with the variants that originated in South Africa and Brazil, this variant is unique and will need to be studied further.

$1 billion in unpaid New York City rent due to coronavirus pandemic: Check your neighborhood here

7 On Your Side Investigates was the first to report on diverse communities getting hit the hardest by COVID-19 back in April. It led to changes in how city leaders tackled the virus. Eviction cases pending as of December 28 in New York City have been suspended until at least February 26, and if a tenant signs and delivers what s called a hardship declaration form due to COVID-19, they can t be evicted until at least May 1. But since March of 2020, 7 On Your Side found eviction notices are at least twice as high in Black and Latino neighborhoods compared to predominately white neighborhoods. Also, the notices are being filed at a rate of at least five times higher in the community s poorest neighborhoods compared to its wealthiest.
