National Pretzel Day: Pretzel Fest draws crowds to downtown Freeport

Jane Lethlean Special to The Journal-Standard FREEPORT Pretzel City celebrated its moniker Saturday as crowds gathered in downtown for a day of food, fun, shopping and entertainment. The inaugural Pretzel Fest was also a jump start on recognizing National Pretzel Day, held Monday, and brought people together for socially distanced festivities. The event, organized by Greater Freeport Partnership, kicked off the day with a barbecue competition in the morning with aromas to entice all residents and visitors. It also featured performances by S&R Dance Team, La Danza de Los Viejitos - Folkloric Dance from Michoacán, Mexico, and a reenactment by Tim Connors as Benjamin Franklin. Pretzel City CrossFit supplied a community workout and burpee challenge, and Your Core Being had yoga in the street.

Freeport Art Museum to host World Migratory Day at Taylor Park

Jane Lethlean Special to The Journal-Standard FREEPORT Borrowing on the theme “Sing, Fly, Soar Like a Bird,” the Northwest Illinois Audubon Society and Freeport Art Museum are partnering for an event called World Migratory Day at 10:30 a.m. on May 8 at Taylor Park. Juliet Moderow of the Northwest Illinois Audubon Society has been working with Barry Treu of FAM to create a day that is part of an international celebration of migratory birds. “The idea is to have kids put on wings made from materials supplied by the Freeport Art Museum to let them know what it is like to soar like a bird, Moderow said. We want the kids to get the feeling of how birds fly, stop, rest up for fuel and take to the sky.”

Area day trips can break the boredom of a long winter

Sherry Maves Special to The Journal-Standard I hope by the time you read this that we’ve seen the last of the snow for February, or the winter for that matter. Between the weather and the pandemic, a lot of folks I’ve talked to are clamoring to get out of the house, me included. We all need something to look forward to. It’s great to see that some attractions are starting to reopen in the area. You can visit the Stephenson County Historical Museum from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There are also two guided tours at noon and 2 p.m. on those days with a maximum of six people on the tour. Masks are required.
