ALLIANCE – Kayden Underwood isn t supposed to laugh.
The 10-year-old, whose mother describes him as funny and outgoing, can t smile either without the risk of ripping a stitch. His family has tried not to say anything humorous around him since April 4 when a dog tore off his top lip.
The fifth-grader at Northside Intermediate School was playing with a pit bull when it jumped up and grabbed his mouth. He was taken to Akron Children s Hospital for surgery. Kayden s aunt, Elizabeth Underwood, said doctors were able to reattach a piece of his lip his sister recovered but not the entire lip.
MILTON
Milton School District students will be released from school one hour early on Mondays during the next school year, giving teachers time to work in professional learning communities.
In 2021-22, middle school students will end their day at 1:50 p.m., high school students at 1:55 p.m., elementary students at 2:35 p.m. and Northside Intermediate School students at 2:40 p.m.
At its Feb. 8 meeting, the school board was given two optionsâearly release on Mondays or no early releaseâand members Mike Hoffman, Dave Holterman, Jennifer Johns and Brian Kvapil voted to see another option with fewer early releases.
On Feb. 22, the school board considered three options: the initial proposal for Mondays, which kept release times as they are now; a one-hour early release on Mondays; and early releases on 16 Mondays.

From Opelika City Schools:
Due to positive COVID-19 tests, close contact exposures, and the lack of available substitute teachers, the decision has been made to quarantine the affected individuals and move Northside Intermediate School staff and students to remote learning for the next 10 days. Students should not report to school and should do their classwork through Google Classroom at home on their assigned Chrome books. Meals for the week will be available for pick up at Jeter Primary School on Monday, February 1 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Students and teachers are scheduled to return to school on Monday, February 8, 2021. Updates will be posted on the school website.
