The Gaston Gazette each year, the school district selects an exceptional student from each high school as the school’s Star Student.
Each student then named their respective Star Teacher, who had the greatest influence on the student during their Gaston County Schools education, and wrote an essay about how the teacher motivated and inspired them.
Each student honoree will receive a framed Star Student certificate and a Star Student lapel pin, and each teacher honoree receives an engraved Star Teacher trophy from
The Gazette.
The students and teachers are recognized during a ceremony and reception at The Schiele Museum in Gastonia, but the pandemic forced the cancellation of the in-person event in 2020 and 2021.
North Gaston JROTC thanks COVID-19 vaccine workers at CaroMont Health
JROTC looks a little different at North Gaston High School than years past, but the school’s young cadets are still serving their community.
Each year since 2011, when Lt. Col. Dwayne Smith founded Wildcat Junior ROTC at North Gaston, students volunteer at Dallas Park, helping with landscaping and painting as part of their service-learning project. However, the JROTC s governing body has restricted what the cadets can do during the pandemic.
“With the pandemic, we’re not allowed to take the cadets out like that,” Smith said.
Instead, the cadets made thoughtful cards for employees who work at the vaccination clinic at CaroMont Regional Medical Center.

Gaston County Schools’ high school seniors will graduate together this May.
Gaston County’s nine traditional high schools – Ashbrook, Bessemer City, Cherryville, East Gaston, Forestview, Hunter Huss, North Gaston, South Point and Stuart W. Cramer – will each hold two ceremonies on Friday, May 28, at their respective football stadiums.
Highland School of Technology will use a different stadium on May 28 due to the small size of its stadium, as the ceremonies will adhere to 6-feet social distancing, according to the school system.
Families of graduating seniors who currently attend school Monday and Tuesday will attend the first ceremony, currently slated for 5:30 p.m.
