it s important to note how many of these gunman are under 21 when these things happen, also protection orders that enable somebody to have guns taken through due process if at risk to themselves or others. we helped disarm somebody who threatened to kill my own mother and it worked through a court order with due process and i think because of that, republicans have done this stuff, you know, governor rick scott signed that law and signed that bill into law and got elected to the senate. and anderson, i think the reality is we are not nearly as divided as i think we are, i ve talked with nra members, many who do agree with me but we all agree on what counts that gun violence should not be continuing in the united states, that s why we re calling on a second march for our lives for june 11th, gun owners, republicans, democrats, nongun owners, everybody who agrees we need to do something about gun violence and demand congress act even in a small way around something like background checks

Most gun rights activists are familiar with the concept of state preemption, a statute reserving all authority for setting and administering gun laws in the hands of the state legislature.
It’s a good system because it mandates uniformity from one state border to another. Proof that preemption is the proper way to regulate firearms lies in the opinion of government officials. Big city mayors and councils hate it with a passion because they want to enforce their own concept of gun control within their jurisdictions.
Recently, Judge Jocelyn Newman of the Court of Common Pleas in Columbia, S.C. ruled that the City of Columbia’s attempt to dance around the Palmetto State’s preemption law was a non-starter. She invalidated ordinances passed in the city because they violated the state law.
believe we have to have expanded background checks. president trump must know that. that includes democrats, republicans, gun owners and nongun owners. we have the solution before us. that s the frustrating part. let s be clear about the problem. right now they re required by brady law to conduct a background check. that law was enacted 25 years ago. since then internet sales and gun shows by private sellers have become big business. they re not subject to the law. with the bill that passed the house says that loophole has to be closed. right now 1-5 guns is sold with no background check. the consequences are deadly like in odessa where a prohibited purchaser got that gun in a private sale. let me ask you this then,

an unwillingness to engage with this issue by senate leadership. what engenders optimism in you? we talk about the unfortunate cycle of all of this. you ve lived through that. you feel like things are regrettably the same after these tragedies take place. what fwigives you optimism that there are going to be policy changes as a result? the people, not the politicians, the people. we have to keep pushing and fighting and proving, like you say, talk one-on-one. i talk one-on-one all the time. i say to somebody give me ten minutes, erase your mind and let s have a conversation. forget your political philosophies. let s just have a conversation. everybody at the end of that conversation will meet me in the middle, gun owners, nongun owners. it doesn t matter. we all want to be safe. i am positive. i am positive that the people can make the difference. our voices need to continue to be heard and that s what we re going to do. we re going to do it and if the politicians don t want to do an
