Joy as DDF tills fields in Mat North

Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Richard Moyo test drives a tractor during the Matabeleland North smallholder farmers tillage support programme launch at Inyathi’s Mahlabathini Village in Bubi District yesterday. A 79-YEAR-OLD frail-looking woman sheds tears of joy as she watches three tractors ploughing her one-hectare piece of land in Mahlabathini Village, Inyathi Matabeleland North. A widow, Mrs Paulina Sibanda who lives alone, has over the years lived off food handouts from neighbours and the Government. The past three consecutive drought years have worsened her plight because neighbours she used to depend on also harvested virtually nothing.

Zimbabwe sees better agriculture season ahead

Ndodana Sibanda shows how the center pivot works to water the wheat in Arda Jotsholo recently. (picture by Nkosizile Ndlovu) HARARE – Following the recent heavy rains that have been pounding Bulawayo, people have gone out in full force to till the land, and should the rains continue, this could have a huge impact on food security. Almost every available space in Bulawayo has been cultivated as people make good use of the available moisture on the ground to produce their own food under the urban agriculture program that has yielded good results in years of good rains. ZBC News observed that people were busy in the fields weeding following good germination of the crop and are optimistic of a good yield this year given the soaking rains that have fallen since the onset of the rainy season.
