Investigators there are now looking this to whether Prison Guards were routinely sleeping on the job during night shifts as two convicted killers planned and made their escape. If this is proven true it means david sweat and richard matt may have been unsupervised as they dug their way to Freedom Three weeks ago. A second prison worker gene palmer, is now charged in connection with the escape. Palmer claims he did not intentionally help the men break out of jail. Cnns Alexander Field has been following the story and has more on gene palmers alleged role in this crime. Reporter an official close to the investigation tells cnn gene palmer gave them needle nosed pliers to fix breakers behind their cells allowing the two men to scout out their escape route. Roof fled, was caught this morning in shelby, North Carolina about 250 miles from charleston. He surrendered without a struggle. Roof from lexington, South Carolina dropped out of high school in the tenth grade and has been arrested at least twice once on a drug possession charge. Apparently he is a longtime racist wearing antiblack patches on his clothing. Those who know him say he often made inappropriate statements about africanamericans. Of a controversial traffic stop in texas that ended with the arrest of a black woman by a white Police Officer. The woman was later found hanging in her cell, and now we have learned jailers knew she was a suicide risk. We have two reports beginning with omar villafranca. Reporter when 28yearold sandra bland was placed into cell 95 at the Waller County jail, there is now evidence her guards knew she had attempted suicide before. According to the sheriffs office, on a jail intake form, she checked yes when asked whether she had tried to kill herself in the last year. Surveillance video from the jail shows guards violated policy by not doing an inperson check on bland hourly, including the morning she was found dead in her cell. Police say she hanged herself from a partition using a plastic bag from the garbage can. Cannon lambert is the family attorney. This family has no evidence that that is the case. None.
