The Guinness Book of Records will continue to count Nigeria among the countries with a curated record of celebrated mediocre players.
This is not to say Nigeria is not blessed with the brilliant. No, the country has a mixture of both the brilliant and the bizarre.
While the brilliant are working assiduously to bring the country to fame, the bizarre seem to be doing the same, but in the reverse direction. And posterity is continuously recording the performance of each.
Those familiar with history may recall how, on Monday, October 25, 1993, in the heat of the June 12 annulment agitations, some Nigerian youngsters under the indoctrination of Mallam Jerry Yusuf, carried out the unthinkable by hijacking an Abuja-bound Nigeria Airways airbus A310 aircraft and diverted it to Niger Republic.

Le groupe islamiste nigérian Boko Haram a pris le contrôle d’une base militaire et de plusieurs localités voisines dans l’extrême nord-est du Nigeria, le long des rives du lac Tchad, forçant les habitants à fuir au Tchad voisin.
Les combattants de Boko Haram ont mené un raid sur les villages de pêcheurs de Kuayen Kuros, Mile 3, Mile 4, Doron-Baga et Bundaram et la ville de Baga, provoquant la fuite de centaines d’habitants par bateaux et pirogues sur le lac, en direction du Tchad voisin, selon des témoins interrogés dimanche par l’AFP.
