» New slide, play structure coming to downtown Bellingham park

By lmurphy April 19, 2021 4:23 pm Dave Walker BELLINGHAM, Wash. Improvements are coming to Bellingham parks, including the installation of a new slide downtown. Crews with the City of Bellingham are working to construct a play structure and slide in Maritime Heritage Park, located downslope of the stairway connecting the park amphitheater and the Whatcom Museum. The structure will include a wide, 21-foot-long curving embankment slide with a 12-foot vertical drop, a stairway to get to the top again, and a second smaller, fully accessible slide and engaging play panels for younger kids. Parks & Recreation Director Nicole Oliver hopes the fun activity will bring families and visitors from all over.

(Photo: Bellingham Technical College) BELLINGHAM, Wash.  The City of Bellingham is closing a public parking lot downtown as safety threats from homeless campers grow. Parks & Recreation Director Nicole Oliver says Bellingham Technical college has documented several incidents that have occurred in and around their fish hatchery on Whatcom Creek, including vandalism, break-ins, physical attacks and threats of aggression. The college’s emergency preparedness and safety manager, Al Jensen, expressed concerns about student safety. He says this is the first step they can take to get the parking lot cleared, noting that it just isn’t safe for his students.
