Reporter elected to journalism society’s board Written by Geoffrey Plant on February 9, 2021
As regular readers are aware, the Daily Press welcomed a new reporter into its newsroom last summer: Makayla Grijalva, a young journalist who graduated from the University of New Mexico in May of last year with a double major in multimedia journalism and political science.
Grijalva, who also held the position of managing editor at the university*s student newspaper, the Daily Lobo, was elected late last year as an at-large board member for the Rio Grande Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
Thanks to a paid fellowship program launched by the New Mexico Local News Fund and the UNM Communication and Journalism Department, Grijalva was placed in the Daily Press newsroom immediately after she graduated last year, and ultimately took over many of the beats that reporter C.P. Thompson covered before abandoning his journalism
About Us
History of the Silver City Daily Press and Independent
The Silver City Daily Press was born June 24, 1935, when the owners of the Silver City Independent, our weekly predecessor, determined it was time to grow along with Grant County, its people and its advertisers.
The past 82 years have brought major changes to the Daily Press, changes which were unimaginable to the pioneers who brought the first printing presses and cases of hand-set type to Grant County.
Those same 82 years have brought incredible changes to the community changes which easily outstripped the remarkable transformation of the print shop of the Independent into the modern full-color print and online versions of the Daily Press.
