PUEBLO â A family in Pueblo is paying it forward for the Pueblo Police Department.
For the second year, Nick Herrera and his family hosted a police appreciation barbecue.
Herrera said his family started this last year because of all the negativity that police were facing. They go out every day, sacrifice, they leave their husbands, they leave their wives and their children and don t know what they are going to encounter and we think that needs to be shown a little respect, Herrera said.

Growing up, Nick Herrera would always hear his dad say to his friends, âHey, compa, want a beer?â So while Herrera, 44, isnât quite fluent in Spanish, heâs very familiar with âcompa,â an informal word for friend or buddy. That term became part of the name of the taproom he and Angel Medina, the mind behind the Pearl Districtâs República and Reforma Roasters, plan to open in downtown Portland later this year: Entre Compas, or âbetween friends.â
Herrera, a former head brewer at Portlandâs LABrewatory (temporarily closed due to COVID-19), says Entre Compasâs vision is to represent BIPOC-owned companies while collaborating with other brewers. He imagines a neon sign where the âMâ in Entre Compas flickers on and off, so it reads âEntre Copas,â or âbetween cups.â Unlike at most taprooms, Herrera says his whole lineup will be collaborationsâacross the state, the country, and in Mexico City.
