Bolstered by the resounding win of ally Oscar Mabuyane at the ANC’s Eastern Cape elective conference, party president Cyril Ramaphosa is ready for the national conference in December when he will seek a second term.
The ANC national office has cleared up the confusion about whether suspended Amathole regional secretary Teris Ntutu could participate in the party’s elective conference starting this weekend. Ntutu was suspended after he was implicated in allegations of corruption. However, his matter was set aside by the Mthatha high court because the summons to have the case reinstated had not been signed by the director of public prosecution.
This weekend, the stakes are much higher for the party as premier Oscar Mabuyane will face off against former ally and MEC Babalo Madikizela for the role of provincial chair.
An announcement on Wednesday by the provincial ANC that no-one would be allowed inside the conference venue when the party hosts its ninth provincial elective conference this weekend, if they are not vaccinated or Covid-19 negative, has attracted mixed feelings from party members. While this announcement caused an uproar in social media circles, with some comrades claiming this was a way to gatekeep some delegates from conference, other party members felt it was the right thing to do.
