The Newtown Athletic Center is open, and each day people hop on treadmills, pump iron or play basketball. They look healthy. They appear happy, too.
It’s an otherwise routine scene, except that the fitness center is in defiance of Gov. Tom Wolf’s orders to close gyms, as well as bars, restaurants and other businesses, Wolf’s effort to slow the surge in coronavirus.
“We’re open, we’ll stay open,” said NAC owner Jim Worthington, sitting in his office overlooking a crowded parking lot.
He fully expects someone, the state police, probably, to show up at his Newtown Township facility to say he’s in violation of Wolf’s orders, and that there will be penalties.
