The kick-off show, Disney’s Newsies, is inspired by the Newsboy Strike of 1899. The Tony Award-winning musical features show-stopping dance numbers and a score by Alan Menken ( Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Tangled .),
Next on the Midland center s MainStage, it’s “happily ever after with a little flavor” with Disney s Descendants, a brand-new show, based on the Disney Channel Original Movies. The musical features favorite songs like “Rotten to the Core” and “Chillin’ Like a Villain”, as Mal, Evie, Carlos, and Jay show us the “Ways to be Wicked.”
In a theatrical atmosphere, period pieces are common, giving the actors the chance to step into the shoes of individuals who would have lived in the past, while giving attendees the chance to travel back in time for a couple of hours.
But with its upcoming production of “Newsies,” those involved with the Amarillo Little Theatre’s Academy hope individuals can relate the true story of the Newsboy Strike of 1899 to what is occurring with the youth in the world of 2021, more than 120 years later.
According to a news release, “Newsies” follows Jack Kelly, the leader of a group of teenagers who organize a strike against publishing titans after the price of newspaper distribution is increased. The ALT Academy’s production, which features 33 students and eight adults, opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the theater’s mainstage, located at 2019 Civic Circle.

Cameron Gray, a junior film major in the Department of Transmedia in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, has been named the recipient of a 2021 Beinecke Scholarship. She is the second Beinecke Scholar in Syracuse University’s history.
The award provides graduate funding and mentorship for juniors in the arts, humanities or social sciences. The Beinecke Scholarship seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated juniors of exceptional promise to pursue graduate study in the arts, humanities and social sciences. The Beinecke Scholarship works with approximately 135 participating institutions. Each school may nominate one candidate per year; the campus nomination process is highly competitive. This year, the Beinecke Scholarship Program received 95 nominations and selected 16 Scholars.
