Dr Monty Soutar, writing about Māori for New Zealand's future

Historian and Māori scholar Dr Monty Soutar has received $100,000 to finish his historical fiction trilogy. Several decades ago Dr Monty Soutar knew someone would have a crack at writing the books he’s currently working on, he just didn’t know it would be him. The historian, Māori scholar and Waitangi Tribunal member has recently been awarded the prestigious, biennial $100,000 Michael King Writer’s Fellowship from Creative New Zealand to finish his trilogy, Kāwai – a saga from the uttermost end of the Earth. The historical novels narrate the experiences of nine successive generations of one Māori family through pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial Aotearoa, spanning the 1700s right through to 2018, and will lay bare the impact of European colonisation on New Zealand to a global audience.

Fringe Festival: 'Company Kamupene' covers one battle in powerful satire

The outfit journeys to their sacred maunga, so Captain Māori can present a taonga to the youngest team member Maiti. Unfortunately they end up on the wrong mountain, there’s an earthquake and poor Maiti is lost. They learn (from Kanu, a message and scroggin bearing bird) of Colonel Whitmore s planned attack on Tītokowaru at Moturoa. Captain Maori tells his men “gather round, I can’t see you”. It’s a solo show, and I found that hilarious. A plan is formed and the remaining team splits in half. Captain Māori and Sergeant Anahera to the dysentery afflicted Colonel to persuade him not to attack, Doctor Hōpe and Corporal Kirokangi to the pā to convince chief Tītokowaru not to egg the Crown on. The plan in action is farcical, the battle they were trying to prevent goes ahead, and they suffer a loss and make a gain. In the end, Company Kamupene endures to continue trying (and probably failing) to make a difference.

175th anniversary of Battle of Ruapekapeka commemorated in Northland Newshub 10/01/2021 Replay Video UP NEXT It s 175 years since the Battle of Ruapekapeka which marked the end of the Northern Wars between Maori and settlers and the start of the New Zealand Land Wars. The last day of commemorations were held on Sunday on the heritage site at the battleground near Kawakawa in Northland. The grass has grown over the trenches of the pa, a once-fortified village. In the mid-1840s it was guarded by two iwi - Ngapuhi and Ngati Hine. Today, their descendants acknowledged their sacrifice. © Newshub The last day of commemorations for the 175th anniversary of the Battle of Ruapekapeka were held on the heritage site at the battleground near Kawakawa in Northland

Four of New Zealand's most fascinating old towns

BROOK SABIN/STUFF New Zealand s tiny towns are home to some of our best hidden gems, from an emerald lake, to cliffs that look like they re from the moon. New Year’s Day may seem like an odd time to put together a guide to New Zealand’s oldest towns. But with many of us either on holiday or planning one, we’re hoping it’ll come in handy. Not just for history buffs, our oldest settlements include a former booze and brothel mecca now doing a roaring trade in jet boat rides and island-hopping cruises, a smallholder farm service town turned wining, dining and shopping hub, and New Zealand’s answer to the French Riviera. Plus arguably the best place in Aotearoa to get a bellyful of fresh kai moana.
