New Bern area traffic, gas and U.S. 70 update headed into 4th of July

This year’s travel for the Fourth of July Weekend is set to be the second highest on record as 47.7 million Americans pack their bags, only 2.5 percent lower than 2019.  Around 1.4 million North Carolinians are projected to travel at least once between July 1 and July 5. Despite gas prices being the most expensive nationwide since 2014, 43.6 million Americans opted for a road trip this Independence Day Weekend and 1.2 million are North Carolinians, according to a press release from AAA Carolinas. The current average gas price in the New Bern area is $2.80 a gallon compared to $2.01 in 2020 and $2.56 in 2019. Since the gas shortage that occurred earlier in the summer, things should be back to normal, said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

Sampson & Son, specializing in Soul Food, opens in New Bern NC

When you hear the name Sampson & Son, it may remind you of the 1970’s TV show, Sanford & Son, starring Redd Foxx as Fred Sanford and Demond Wilson as his son Lamont. The father and son owned and operated a business together and always kept viewers laughing and happy. Sampson & Son, owned and operated by Elton Sampson and his son, Lester McKeithan, hope to have the same happy atmosphere in their newly opened restaurant located near downtown New Bern at 806 Queen Street, one block from the New Bern Police Station. The restaurant specializes in soul food, down-home cooking originating in the southern United States. The menu includes foods such as turkey BBQ, fried and baked chicken, shrimp, fish, collard greens, yams, homemade chicken salad as well as other well-known southern dishes. The desserts are made homemade by Elton’s wife, Sandra. His daughter, Thomasa, also helped with the family business. Sadly, she passed away unexpectedly in 2014.
