And i believe perhaps hes a war hero, but right now he said some very bad things about a a lot of people. Stuart that comment, as you might imagine, did not go down very well. He is answering his critics in an op to you would in the usa today. Heres one of the quotes. John mccain has could his own constituents who want a secure border crazies no one including the Republican National committee criticize the senator for those comments. Hes not back down on what he said about john mccain. With us this morning ashly webster. Ill start with you, katherine. Lets get right at it, shall we . Do you think trumps finished . , bu in no event shall debate continue beyond 11 50 a. M. The chair recognizes the gentlelady from indiana, mrs. Walorski for five minutes. Mrs. Walorski thank you, mr. Speaker. I rise today in support of legislation i introduced last week as a companion piece to a bill authored by senator kelly ayotte to protect the safety of the United States and its allies and restrict the transfers of detainees from guantanamo bay. Since mid november, the president and his administration have ramped up an effort to make good on a Campaign Promise to increase the number of the release of guantanamo detainee transfers. Last night during his state of the Union Address, the president reaffirmed his commitment to close this facility once and for all and he is releasing prisoners at an alarming rate. 21 terrorists have been released just in november alone to foreign countries. This comes at the expense of our own country. This bill would suspend the transfer of high and medium risk detainees and prohibit
The impact, hey, theyre back there calling the shots. Would that have a demoralizing impact on the unit . If you were still with that unit . Oh, no. American forces are going to do whatever they can every single day to do what theyre supposed to do. I dont think theyre really worried about anybody else. Okay. Mr. Walsh, in terms of permanent impact on policy, have we set a precedence by doing this in regards to all the other terrorists groups 1234. I believe we have, congressman. I believe weve set a dangerous precedent and id encourage this body to look at future efforts towards release and calls to close guantanamo. We had these gentleman detained. Men and women gave their lives to detain them. And now, unfortunately, i believe, men and women will give their lives to capture or kill them once again. Thank you. And i want to thank the panel. For the week to come. The speaker pro tempore without objection, the gentleman is recognized. Mr. Hoyer mr. Speaker, before i inquire of the majority leader, i want to say at the outset, i have now and have had Great Respect for the majority leader. The majority leader is a person of significant intellect, he cares about this institution, cares about our country and works hard on behalf of the principles which he believes in and which his party believes in. And i have enjoyed the opportunity to work with him. We obviously, as people have seen from the colloquys from time to time, have not always agreed on what we ought to be doing. He served there with distinction and then was elected to the house of representatives in 2000 to succeed a good friend of mine, the former mayor of richmond, tom bliley, who mr. Cantor chaired his campaign for at least three cycles. Obviously su
But, you know, without an american advisory effort and american units to partner with, theres no one there to oversee bad commanders, to say this guy needs to be relieved. When we were there, for instance, maliki removed every single bedivide commander in the Brigade Commander in the National Police and twothirds of the [inaudible] some of them twice. So we forced accountability on the state. But when we removed that check on malikis baser tendencies, he was able to do whatever he wanted to do starting with the attempted arrest of the Vice President of the state of iraq. And just to follow up on that , maliki has his own set of Political Considerations only some of which are to have an effective fighting force and some of which are to create Patronage Networks and all those sorts of things. One of the things that was interesting to me about your account of the charge of the knights is it wasnt clear to me whether maliki thought the u. S. Was actually vital in his inning. And maliki may
