The Democratic Alliance (DA) yesterday submitted a matter of public importance for debate in Council regarding the Nelson Mandela Municipality’s plan to address the crisis created by water outages and the Metro providing water that is unfit for human consumption to its residents. I have written to the Speaker of the Nelson Mandela Bay Council, Cllr Gary van Niekerk, and requested this debate in terms of Rule 28 of Council Rules: Matter of Public Importance. The next sitting of council takes place on Monday, 28 February 2022.

COMMENT
As the work of the Zondo Commission makes abundantly clear, addressing the gross abuse of political power is an urgent need. To that end, greater accountability and discipline within political parties must be part of the solution.
Intra-party democracy (IPD) is essential to decentralise power within political parties, and not only to allow fair and inclusive participation by their memberships but to hold party officials accountable in the bigger battle to combat abuse, corruption, and misgovernment.
