After stating his desire to outlaw polygamy in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma now claims that the state s crime rate against women has dropped by 41%.
The panel, headed by Justice (Retired) Rumi Phookan, has been asked to submit its report within two months, the chief minister said in a tweet on Thursday night.
The Assam government has constituted a four-member expert committee to examine the legislative competence of the state legislature to enact a law to end polygamy, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
On Thursday night, Sarma announced the state government has constituted this committee to “examine the legislative competence of state legislature to enact a law to end polygamy”. He stated that the committee has been directed to submit its report within 60 days.
