The lawyer, who has worked in the regulatory field, wants to run to help build a city that prioritizes growth and change but also values diversity, equity, quality, and inclusion. At a candidate forum last week, Clements suggested the city form a housing corporation to help improve the diversity of housing stock including affordable housing. He says the corporation could buy dilapidated buildings, refit and renovate them, then have control over the type of housing they ultimately become. Though affordable housing is typically seen as a provincial issue, he says the municipality is able to legislate a bylaw requiring developers to include affordable housing plans.
