Two people were taken to hospital for treatment of minor smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at an apartment building in Esquimalt, B.C., on Tuesday.
Everyone inside had escaped uninjured by the time firefighters arrived, he said.
Crews extinguished the flames quickly, Widdifield said, working first to hose down the flames outside before moving inside.
Investigators are still working to determine the cause, but there’s nothing to suggest at this point that it’s suspicious, he said.
The fire is believed to have started on the outside deck, which was damaged by the flames.
The downstairs unit of the duplex, home to three people, suffered mostly water damage. The upper unit, which is home to a family of four, was damaged by smoke, Widdifield said.
