PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD, Maine - In 2010, Angela Hampson was a 15-year-old freshman at Portsmouth High School working as a counselor for the Summer Youth Program at the shipyard when she first crossed paths with the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Outreach Program. She believes encountering the Outreach Program played a profound role in pursuing an engineering degree, becoming a Deep Submergence Engineer in October 2020, and eventually volunteering with Outreach herself.
The Outreach Program has grown over the years impacting thousands of students annually throughout New England. Hampson’s journey has come full circle, proving the Outreach Program’s mission is being actualized inspiring and building a robust and technologically-literate workforce.
PHILADELPHIA
Naval Surface Warfare Center, Philadelphia Division (NSWCPD) recently released the Commandâs Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) outreach charter and strategic plan, which share an increased focus on the future workforce, for 2021-2025.
The new STEM Outreach Charter lays out six goals to strengthen the STEM education in the Greater Philadelphia Area to strengthen the Commandâs future workforce pipeline.
âThis revision focused on making sure that all of the programs that we support align with our goals,â said Tristan Wolfe, NSWCPDâs STEM Outreach Program Manager. âOur number one goal is to attract and engage a high achieving, diverse pool of students to the NSWCPD STEM Pipeline. We are doing that by increasing the total number of participants by targeting communities that are underrepresented in the STEM field and enhancing the quality of STEM education in the region.â
