Inger Andersen of UNEP underscores the urgency of nature-based solutions and calls for increased financing to address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. She urges investment in protected areas and sustainable practices, emphasizing the intrinsic value of nature in addressing global challenges, speaking during the UN Science-Policy-Business Forum session at UNEA-6.
In her report, UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen identified six areas where the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly may wish to compel more effective, inclusive and sustainable multilateral action: Implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, Advancing integrated approaches for a water-secure world, Ensuring responsible mining and sustainable minerals and metals use, Advancing cooperation around nutrients, especially phosphorus, Reviewing climate-altering technologies and measures, and Aligning the financial system for sustainability.
Thank you for the invitation to speak at the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum. We at UNEP hold this well-established platform in high esteem and consider it an integral part of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA).
